Elegy for the Future is an experimental and eco-dystopian short film where humans apathetically search for meaning and connection in the near future. The film establishes a dark tone blended virtual and grounded spaces for characters to pass through in dissociative states of distracted existence. Our protagonist Sybil, a futuristic digital sex worker, must navigate several complex relationships, including falling in love with a rogue AI generated from a once human being. The viewer is inspired to question what it means to engage with humanity on a screen versus in the physical. The nihilism of this slow decay of consciousness becomes a new form of on screen quiet terror that facilitates the slow degradation of the earth and the ability for humans to physically survive.
